No production cars are yet at levels four and five – high and full automation.

The third level – conditioning assistance – is where the vehicle can all but take over, with the driver largely on standby. Level two, partial assistance, is where computers take over more functions including steering. Level one, known as driver assist, has been around for several years and includes cruise control. There are five official levels of autonomy for self-driving cars. Initially, self-driving cars may be allowed only on specific stretches of motorway when traffic is sufficiently heavy that the vehicle can keep to its 37mph limit in a single lane. On top of the sensors already in place for cruise control, parking assistance and accident prevention, the driverless cars will have additional cameras, microphones and sensors. These cars must have a lane-keeping system designed to drive more safely than a human.
